Popcorn ceiling removal is messy if it isn't done right. Ours isn't. Every popcorn ceiling removal project starts with full 6-mil plastic containment, floor protection, and zip walls to seal the work area — then scraping, skim-coating to a smooth finish, priming, and painting with a premium ceiling paint.
Asbestos testing and abatement
Popcorn ceilings installed before 1980 can legally contain asbestos. Before we begin scraping in any older home, we collect a small sample and submit it to a certified lab for testing. If asbestos is detected, we stop and coordinate licensed abatement with a partner before any of our crew touches the ceiling. If the sample is clean (most are), we proceed with full plastic containment and scraping.
Skim coat to smooth — the part most contractors skip
Scraping popcorn off a ceiling leaves uneven mud, exposed tape joints, and texture transitions. A flat ceiling paint over that mess looks worse than the popcorn did. We always skim coat the entire ceiling after scraping — usually two thin passes with a 12-inch knife — sand to a uniform smooth surface, prime, and finish with two coats of premium flat ceiling paint. The result is a true smooth ceiling that reads as new construction.
